About Dr BN Charles
Dr BN Charles is a psychiatrist based in Cape Town, offering specialised TMS therapy at Mediclinic Crescent Mental Health Services in Claremont. His practice is dedicated to providing advanced, evidence-based neurobiological treatments that support functional recovery for patients managing treatment-resistant depression
Specialized Training
Dr. BN Charles has completed a Clinical Certification Course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation ( TMS ) through the Academy of Brain Stimulation, an internationally recognised organisation dedicated to advancing neuromodulation therapies
This certification ensures that TMS treatments are delivered according to international clinical standards and best practice guidelines

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation ?
TMS is a non-invasive, evidence-based therapy that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain involved in mood control and depression
Unlike medications that travel through the entire bloodstream, TMS acts directly on the area of the brain known to be underactive in people with depression. This precision allows for effective treatment without the systemic side effects often associated with antidepressants.
The procedure is performed in a comfortable, relaxed setting. Patients remain awake and alert throughout the sessions and can immediately return to their normal daily routine. It is a powerful, non-invasive alternative for those seeking neurological balance and functional recovery

How TMS Works
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain.

During a session, a specialized coil is placed gently against the scalp. This coil generates brief magnetic fields, which pass safely through the skull and induce small electrical currents in the brain. These currents stimulate nerve cells in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)—a region involved in mood regulation that is often underactive in individuals experiencing depression.

By repeatedly stimulating this area, TMS helps to restore and regulate brain activity. Over time, this can improve communication between different brain regions, supporting healthier patterns of brain function and leading to improvements in mood, focus, and overall well-being.

TMS does not require anesthesia, is generally well tolerated, and allows individuals to return to their normal daily activities immediately after each session.

Is TMS therapy right for you?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation ( TMS ) provides a powerful, non-invasive alternative for those seeking neurobiological balance. Our discovery sessions are designed to inform and empower your mental health journey with clarity and professional care.
You may be a good candidate for TMS if:
-
You have not found sufficient relief from at least two antidepressant medications ( treatment-resistant depression)
-
You are specifically looking for a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment path
-
You want to reduce or completely avoid the systemic side effects of oral medications
-
You can commit to daily treatment sessions over the course of several weeks
-
You are working with a mental health professional who supports your pursuit of TMS

Take the first step toward feeling better. Schedule your discovery session to learn if TMS is right for you.
Important Safety Notes
TMS therapy is remarkably safe but is contraindicated for individuals with non-removable metallic objects near the head ( such as cochlear implants or stents). A clinical review is required for those with a medical history of seizure disorders
Possible side effects
Most clinical patients tolerate sessions with ease. Occasional mild, transient scalp sensitivity or a light headache may occur during initial treatments. Unlike systemic medications, TMS lacks systemic side effects like weight gain or sedation
